Philodendron Care - Tips to Beautify Your Neglected Houseplant

One of the most common houseplants in America and one of the most abused is the philodendron. Found in homes and office buildings around the world, the most common variety often appears as a sparse vine 10 feet long with a few heart-shaped leaves scattered along its length. Philodendrons are native to the tropics and are part of the aroid family (Araceae). Philodendrons come in many shapes and sizes, from small creeping vines to giant trees. There are many different species of philodendron, each with its own characteristics in terms of size, shape or leaf color.

Most philodendrons are at home in the jungles of tropical America and are adapted to medium intensity filtered light, similar to that of a dense jungle floor. Because of this adaptation, they are the best candidates to survive in the low to medium light of many homes and offices. While most philodendrons do well in low light, the more colorful varieties require brighter locations.

Philodendrons grow best in a slightly tight pot and will form a nice ball of intertwined roots, so you can plant them in a pot that may seem almost too small. Pot your philodendron in late winter or spring.

Fill the bottom of the pot a quarter full with broken clay to aid drainage, then cover it with moss, grass or large leaves to prevent the drainage from clogging. Feed your philodendron in spring and again in mid-summer with a liquid houseplant fertilizer. You can propagate your own philodendrons by taking a cutting with at least 2 joints and planting it.

How To Make The Perfect Potting Mix For Anthuriums

If you want to raise a vibrant anthurium plant, choosing the right planting medium is vital. If you choose the wrong mix of potting soil, your plant may grow slowly, stop producing flowers or, worse, die. To choose the best potting soil, you must first learn more about where anthuriums grow in their native environment.

Anthuriums are native to South America, where they live in lush, hot jungles, mostly on tree trunks or in the forest canopy.

Why do anthuriums grow on trees? They grow on trees because it allows them to receive a lot of water from fog and rain, while being exposed to dry breezes. They are paradoxical plants because they need a lot of water, but prolonged contact with moisture can harm them. By residing in trees, their roots are kept out of standing water and they can dry out a bit before the next rain.

When choosing a planting medium, you will find that most planting mixes on the market hold too much water. If you use this type of mix, your anthurium may have a short life as it slowly and gradually drowns from excess water. What happens is that the excess water blocks oxygen to the root system and allows anaerobic germs and fungi to grow. These microorganisms then begin to attack your plant and cause root rot.

To avoid this, you need to make your own soil. Your soil mix should drain quickly and it should be light and loose to keep your anthurium healthy. To get the best potting soil mix possible, mix: five parts miracle grow moisture control potting soil, two parts peat moss, two parts orchid planting medium and one part perlite. Mix well and plant your anthurium. This mixture works well because it drains quickly and is closest to the natural growing medium of anthuriums.
