One of the things I hear from brides when they first start looking for a weddingmakeup artistis, “I’ve never done anything like this before, so I don’t really know what to do."
This is true! Most brides have never planned a wedding before, and many have never hired a professional makeup artist. It can be confusing and overwhelming! I am writing this article as an industry insider to help guide all brides-to-be through the process and make it as easy and stress-free as possible.
"How do I find a makeup artist near me?
The first step is to locate makeup artists in your area and make a list of the ones you want to see. Recommendations from your venue, wedding planner or photographer are worth their weight in gold. They deal with weddings all the time, have worked with hundreds of other vendors and know who is good.
Most venues and planners have a "recommended vendors list” that they are happy to share with their booked brides. Photographers are always happy to give recommendations for reputable, talented makeup artists because the good ones make their jobs easier! (Less Photoshop and time spent editing? Oh yeah!) Friends who have recently gotten married can also be a good source of recommendations.
Ask them who they worked with and if they would do it again. And of course, the Internet has made this task much easier than in years past, and a simple Internet search for “makeup artists in (insert city here)” should bring up a list of them. So now you’ve selected some potential artists….
“How do I choose the right makeup artist for me?”
There are 5 important points you should look for when making this decision.
Website and Portfolio - Reputable makeup artists have a professional looking website that has pictures of their work. Beware of websites that use stock images or overly edited photos.
Also, remember that a tacky-looking website is often a sign of tacky taste - and most likely poor taste in makeup. Online portfolios should show a range of different looks, from barely visible natural makeup to dramatic evening looks. If only one makeup look is shown on the website, chances are it’s the only look they’ve mastered, and that’s the look you and everyone else in your wedding party will get.
Style - Does the makeup shown on the makeup artist’s website match the style you want? If you prefer romantic makeup looks with dewy skin, stay away from artists who prefer heavily contoured, Instagram-esque looks. And vice versa - if you like the heavy Kim Kardashian makeup look, then the artists who present more natural makeup looks are not the right choice for you.
Reviews - There are so many places on the internet where consumers can post and find reviews. Take advantage of them! For wedding service providers, websites like The Knot, WeddingWire, and Yelp are fantastic resources.
Check out the reviews for any makeup artist you’re considering, but keep a few things in mind. First, it’s becoming easier and easier for businesses to set up fake reviews for themselves. If you’re scrolling through reviews and see dozens of 5-star ratings within a few days, the company probably paid people to write those reviews for them. This is usually done to counteract previous negative reviews and improve the company’s overall rating.
Makeup Brushes
While most makeup compacts come with mini brushes for application, it’s very helpful to have a good set of personal makeup brushes instead. The small brushes that come in compact blush and eyeshadow products often don’t last long and don’t apply makeup well.
Purchasing a makeup brush set is a good investment that shouldn’t be too expensive. When choosing makeup brushes, there are different types of brushes to look out for. First, you should choose a large powder brush. These brushes have a large, round tip with thick, soft bristles and are best for evenly applying powder to the face.
Powder brushes can also be used for bronzer, but should not be confused with their slightly smaller counterpart, the blush brush. The blush brush is the perfect size for applying blush to just the right areas of the face. When you use a powder brush for blush, you often have no control over where the color goes.
With a blush brush, you get the definition and coverage you want. Most makeup brushes are used for the eyes. You should definitely look for a simple eyeshadow brush, which usually has just a small square of bristles to apply color all over the eyelid and beyond.
However, if you want to achieve different makeup effects on the eyes, it is helpful to choose an angled brush that allows you to apply makeup neatly in the crease and outer corner of the eye. A brush with a fine tip is good for applying eyeliner or a line of dark eyeshadow directly on the lash line for an excellent effect. Finally, there are lip brushes.
These brushes are usually fine pointed and have very sturdy bristles. They are used to apply lip liner, lip gloss or lipstick evenly and correctly. Because of the makeup that is applied with lip brushes, they may need to be cleaned more frequently than the other types of makeup brushes.
