Getting Your Roof Cleaned - Some Important Tips

No matter how impressive a well-maintained home may look from the curb, a roof overgrown with moss can give even the most majestic home a demeaning appearance. A demeaning appearance, however, is not the only problem that excessive moss can cause on the roof cleaning of most people's largest asset.

Unlike many other forms of vegetation, moss doesn't need direct sunlight to grow - so moss can grow on the shady sides of roofs.

Moss is even able to draw vital, growth-promoting nutrients from the organic compounds that make up most roofing materials used to build modern roofs.

Once tiny cracks and depressions appear on the otherwise smooth surface, water can seep through the tiles. The deterioration is accelerated during the winter months when the ambient temperature drops below zero and moisture freezes and turns to ice. The natural expansion of the ice causes small cracks to widen, and the shingle begins to flutter and fall apart.

So it makes perfect sense to keep infestations of moss and other roof fungi under control if you want to avoid costly tile replacement or extensive roof restoration.

There are several ways to rid roof shingles of moss. However, the most common and economical method is to gently pressure clean the roof tiles with a low-pressure cleaning system. Once all moss, algae and fungi are removed, the roof should be allowed to dry and, once dry, sprayed with an effective, preferably biodegradable, fungicide to kill any spores remaining after pressure cleaning. The ideal and cheapest fungicide is a solution of iron oxide dissolved in water at a 1:5 ratio (1 ounce of iron oxide to 1 pint of water).

Removing moss from your property's roof should not be considered a "cosmetic makeover" because removing moss from a heavily infested roof is much more than cosmetic makeover, it is much more. By removing moss and other growth and then treating the roof with a fungicide to kill any remaining moss spores to prevent further growth, you are taking a worthwhile step that will extend the life of your roof structure.

Cleaning roof moss can be a very dangerous project for an inexperienced homeowner and should only be done by an experienced roof cleaning company that not only has the necessary expertise, but also has access to the proper equipment needed for such a project, such as ladders, ropes, safety harnesses, etc.

Another advantage of hiring a professional company for roof moss removal is that companies that specialize in such work usually offer other forms of exterior cleaning, such as gutter cleaning, patio and driveway renovation, and asphalt painting and repair.

To find a suitable company to clean your roof, simply type "roof cleaning company" or "roof moss removal company" into a search engine of your choice: Yahoo, Bing or Google, etc.

So to find a local company, type in the same search term with the addition of the area you live in. An example would be something like "roof cleaning company Tunbridge Wells" etc.
