Will a Stun Gun Protect Me?

There are many types of non-lethal self-defense weapons: Defensive sprays, tasers, knives, alarms, batons, and a wide range of stun guns in many shapes, sizes, and voltages. This article is about stun guns.

What is a stun gun?

A stun gun is a hand-held, battery-powered or electrically charged device that delivers a powerful electric shock to stop an attacker. They are not weapons in the traditional sense because they do not fire bullets, but instead shoot electricity at the attacker. A stun gun has two prongs on the end of the device. If you touch an attacker with the prongs while pulling the trigger, a strong electric current is conducted from the prongs through the attacker's clothing and into his body.

When you press the tines of the stun gun against a person, the attacker quickly becomes immobilized as he feels severe pain and completely loses muscle control. However, because the stun gun uses a low level of current, no serious or permanent injuries are inflicted on the attacker; they are merely immobilized for 5-60 minutes, depending on how long they were stunned.

Stun guns are used by police departments, security agencies, and individuals who want to protect themselves from attack. They have proven to be an excellent defense tool. They are powered by one to three 9-volt batteries and have a voltage of 50,000 to 1,000,000 volts.

How does a stun gun work?

The stun gun uses high voltage and low amperage to affect the muscle and nervous systems of the human body. Most stun guns operate at milliamps and do not rely on high amperage or pain to have an effect. It feels like a 10,000-pound punch to the laughing muscles. The stun gun delivers its energy to the muscles at a high pulse rate.

This causes the muscles to contract rapidly, resulting in a loss of energy that deprives the muscles of needed blood sugar. The attacker cannot produce energy for his muscles, and his body is exhausted and unable to function properly for up to sixty minutes. The resulting loss of energy makes it difficult to move and function. This leads to disorientation and loss of balance, leaving the attacker in a passive and confused state. However, this has no significant effect on the heart and other organs.

Are stun guns safe?

Stun guns have proven to be safe and effective non-lethal self-defense tools. They do not cause permanent damage to an attacker. While I did find an article about the death of a toddler from a stun gun, I could find no evidence that the electrical charge of the stun gun has any negative psychological or neurological effects on adults. The effects on the heart or other major organs are very insignificant.

Stun guns do not permanently injure or kill adults because of the voltage; it is the amps that hurt you. One amp can kill a person. Most stun guns only deliver 3 milliamps or less. That is far less than the amperage that could permanently harm a person.

Will I be stunned if the attacker also touches me?

If an attacker touches you while you are stunning them, the current will not be transferred to your body. The electric current is absorbed by the attacker's muscles and does not pass to you, no matter what the conditions. Even if the attacker holds you down, the current cannot get to you.

Are stun guns legal?

Stun guns are illegal in some states, cities, counties and countries;
