Looking for something new for your mosaic art? Here’s a fresh idea. Make mosaics out of large pieces of stained glass, as if you were making a stained glass window, instead of using small pieces cut into the old familiar standard shapes of squares, rectangles, and triangles.
After sticking with this traditional practice for so long, I got bored with it and wanted something different. I put down my mosaic artist hat and put on my stained glass artist hat for a change. After doing a few stained-glass pieces, it dawned on me.
The first important point I learned about making mosaics from stained glass patterns is that you should cut the base material to the exact size of a pre-made frame with an open back. That way you don’t have to pay five times the price for a custom frame.
I wait for my favorite hobby store to offer its ready-made open-back frames at half price, so I usually pay about $25 for an attractive frame, including mounting, paper backing, and hanging hardware. My favorite size is 18 by 24 inches. For backing material, I prefer to use plain 1/8-inch hardboard, which you can get at your favorite hardware store.
I usually get the boards cut to 2 by 4 feet for about $5. So for a measly five dollars, I have enough basic material for two mosaics, which is good if you’re a starving artist on a tight budget. It’s important to note that ¼-inch is the maximum thickness you can achieve to make the mosaic fit into a finished open-backed frame.
Once all the pieces are glued in place and the glue has dried for at least 48 hours, fill in the spaces with your preferred grout color, just as you would if you were making the mosaic with the standard small square or triangular pieces.
I usually use medium gray grout, but my latest preference is anthracite (black) grout. The more mosaics I install with black grout, the better I like it. The color of the grout can make or break the final look of your mosaic. So if you’re not sure what grout color to use, it’s best to choose a medium gray.
Once the grout has dried overnight, take the mosaic to your favorite craft store if they have a sale on finished frames with open backs. My favorite store has a 50% off sale every two weeks, and if it’s a sale week, I just wait a week. Pick out several frame styles and colors, and lay them over your mosaic one at a time.
Don’t settle for the first frame you find. Ask the salesperson which frame they think will work best with your mosaic. See which frame shows off the colors of your mosaic the best.
I often ask other nearby customers what they think, and they are always willing to give their opinion. Once you find the perfect frame, the salesperson attaches your mosaic, glues on the paper backing, and installs the hanging and wire.
Stone Floor medallion is one of the most magnificent and noble decorative products. It is widely used for flooring, wall cladding, table tops in modern architecture and has become designers’ and consumers’ favorite choice.
Natural stone medallions typically have the shape of a medal or emblem, consisting of various oval or circular patterns so to use for elegant decorations. Stone floor medallions are frequently used as the focal point in a foyer or other floor area. A proper design medallion can make your floor an extraordinary floor
What is a stone floor medallion?
The stone medallion is like a natural stone painting pattern created by people using many types of stone instead of paints. The designer takes advantage of the unique color and veins of the natural stone and combines them with artistic conception and design to create a beautiful stone medallion.
Actually, most of the floor medallions are made of marble because of their unique and beautiful veins and are also not too hard to process (compared to granite). So stone medallions are usually called marble medallions. At present, there are some special stone floor medallions using sandstone and slate, but they are not as popular as marble medallions.
Stone floor medallion development:
As people demand more and more complicated medallion patterns, traditional tools can no longer meet this requirement. Thanks to the stone processing technique upgrade, water-jet cutting machines solve this problem and have been widely used in stone medallion manufacturing. Now, some people call a stone medallion a water-jet medallion.
To some extent, the stone medallion can be viewed as a kind of mosaic art. It is a new product derived from the combination of mosaic art craft and new processing techniques.
In the earlier years, stone medallions are just some stone tiles put together and they are just like a big-size stone mosaic. In recent years with the application of the waterjet technique and upgrade of processing precision, people have brought stone floor medallions to a higher level and formed their own style.
