Ford now supports SYNC 3 with software updates to support Apple Carplay Screens and Android Auto™ for 2016 and 2017 model year vehicles.
Customers can now update the software by downloading it to a USB drive, visiting the dealership or via a Wi-Fi connection. This is Ford's first software update via Wi-Fi. It offers a convenient and automated alternative to previous update methods
Customers with 2016 model year Ford vehicles can update to the new SYNC 3 version 2.2 to receive this support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
"Our SYNC 3 software platform is designed to be easy to update so we can provide our customers with the latest and greatest features and safety enhancements," said Don Butler, executive director, Ford Connected Vehicle and Services. "With over-the-air updates, we can deliver new features to our customers in the background while they continue to use their vehicle."
Android Auto
Compatible with Android™ devices running version 5.0 or later, Android Auto brings the Android experience safely and easily into the vehicle. It features Google Maps, Google Play Music, phone, messaging and third-party apps projected onto the vehicle's built-in display and available through voice control. With a simplified user interface, large touch screens, Google voice search and easy-to-use voice control, Android Auto is designed to minimize distractions while driving.

Apple CarPlay
Apple CarPlay is compatible with iPhone 5 and newer models running iOS 7.1 or later. Apple CarPlay provides iPhone users with an intuitive way to make phone calls, use voice-activated navigation, listen to music, and send and receive messages. This convenience allows drivers to focus on the road. Users can control Apple CarPlay from the vehicle display or via Siri voice control. Apple CarPlay support requires a USB hub upgrade, which is available at Ford dealers.
