How to Fit Fascias and Soffits

Properly mounted soffits will protect your home from damage caused by exposure to the elements, while the impositions will support the gutters that collect all the rainwater and remove it through the drainage holes.

Preparing for the job

When replacing soffits and fascias, it is not advisable to work on a ladder. Ideally, a scaffold should be erected for this type of work.

Before replacing soffits and fascias, it is essential to choose the best style, colour and size of soffits and fascia cleaning for your home's exterior. Improperly sized soffits and fascias can spoil the look of your home's exterior.

Remove fascia panels

Remove the first row of shingles from your roof. Use a knife to trim a few inches off the existing asphalt shingles and remove the gutter. Remove fascia and soffits with a pry bar before checking the rafters for rot. Trim and replace areas affected by rot.

Fastening the soffits

Fasten the soffits to the underside of the ends of the wood joists using nails. Close any gaps between the panels and the joists with wood packers. Support the back of the panel at the top of the wall and tighten it to prevent it from being lifted by high winds.

Fastening the fascia boards

Fasten the fascia boards to the timbers with nails. The nails should hold the boards securely enough to prevent bending or pivoting. The boards must be able to support the shingles, gutter and the weight of rainwater or snow.

Ensure that the fascia boards do not obstruct the opening and closing of the house windows. If the boards obstruct the opening and closing of the windows, adjust the boards.

Positioning the vents and gutter brackets.

Attach an eave vent batten to the top edge of the fascia board to prevent condensation in the attic. Fasten this batten with nails.

Screw the gutter brackets to the fascia. Use a spirit level to check that the gutter falls correctly and that water can flow easily. Use support brackets spaced approximately 800 mm apart to prevent future sagging of the gutter.

Positioning the gutter

Position the gutter and ensure that all joints are secured to the facade with screws to prevent movement. Test the gutter with water to make sure there are no leaks. If necessary, install a new rainwater pipe and gutter leaf guards.

Replacing the eave felt

Install the replacement have felt. Place the felt under the existing roofing felt and make sure the felt overlaps the newly installed gutter. If necessary, attach a bird comb to the top edge of the fascia to prevent birds from accessing the attic.

Cleaning the boards and gutters

Clean the boards and gutter. Apply a silicone-based sealant to exterior walls and window frames to prevent insect infestation and to finish the job.
